Prevent Policy

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to safeguard children and young people from the risks of radicalisation and exposure to extremist ideologies. Rainbow Hands Respite and Childcare Services Ltd recognises its duty under the Counterterrorism and Security Act 2015 to have 'due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism,' known as the Prevent Duty. We are committed to creating a safe environment where children can learn, play, and grow free from the risk of radicalisation, discrimination, or extremist influence.
Policy Statement

At Rainbow Hands, we actively promote equality, inclusion, and respect for all. We recognise that children and families can be exposed to harmful narratives or extremist views through online content, social media, or within their communities. Our role is to identify early signs of vulnerability and intervene appropriately by offering guidance, support, and referrals where needed. All staff share the responsibility for protecting children from extremist influence or radicalisation.
Aims

• To protect children and families from exposure to extremist ideologies.
• To promote British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
• To identify children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and take appropriate action.
• To ensure staff are trained and confident in recognising and responding to concerns.
Recognising Signs of Radicalisation or Extremism

Children or young people vulnerable to radicalisation may show changes in behaviour, language, or attitudes. This might include becoming withdrawn or secretive, showing increased prejudice, expressing sympathy for extremist causes, or displaying hostility towards others. While such signs do not always indicate radicalisation, they must be taken seriously and discussed with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Roles and Responsibilities

• Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Ensures staff understand Prevent Duty responsibilities, acts as point of contact for concerns, and liaises with safeguarding partners and the Channel Panel if appropriate.
• All Staff and Volunteers – must complete Prevent awareness training, be alert to early indicators of concern, report immediately to the DSL, and model inclusive practice promoting British Values in everyday activities.
Responding to Concerns

If a member of staff identifies a concern that a child or family member may be at risk of radicalisation:
1. Report the concern immediately to the DSL.
2. Record observations factually and confidentially.
3. The DSL will assess the concern and seek advice if required from:
• Hampshire Prevent Team: prevent.engagement@hampshire.police.uk
• Children’s Services: 0300 555 1384
• Police (Emergency): 999 if there is an immediate risk.
4. Where necessary, referrals may be made to the Channel Programme, a multi-agency safeguarding process supporting individuals at risk of radicalisation.
Promoting British Values in Practice

• Encouraging turn-taking, sharing, and respect during play and group activities.
• Teaching children to understand right and wrong and make safe, informed choices.
• Celebrating a variety of cultural festivals and traditions.
• Creating a safe environment where everyone’s voice is heard and respected.
Training and Awareness

All staff will complete Prevent Awareness and Safeguarding Training as part of induction and refresh this training at least every two years. The DSL will ensure ongoing updates and discussions during supervision or team meetings to maintain awareness.
Monitoring and Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes to guidance, legislation, or practice
